Robert enlisted from Wayne County, North Carolina at age 18 as a Sergeant in Company "D", 4th North Carolina Infantry, on 15 April 1861. He was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 16 January 1863, and 1st Lt. in April 1863.

He was captured at Middletown, Virginia on 15 September 1862 and confined at Fort Delaware until transferred on 2 October 1862. He was formally exchanged on 10 November.

Robert was killed in action at the battle of Chancellorsville on 3 May 1863, and was buried here on 17 May 1863. A marker was placed in March 2018 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery".
