John was the son of John Lightfoot Blunt and Elizabeth Sarah Perkins. He was married 6 January 1853 to Virginia Woodward. Virginia died two weeks after giving birth to their only child, Alfretta. He next married Ellen in 1861. They had one child, a daughter who died in infancy a few weeks after Ellen.

He enlisted in Co. "C", 1st Battalion, Richmond Local Defense Troops (the "Armory" or "Ordnance" Battalion). He was killed at the "Battle of Green's Farm", an action fought along Brook Road in Henrico County north of Richmond. His unit was fighting Union cavalry troopers led by Gen. Judson Kilpatrick as part of a large raid on Richmond.

John's grave is near his wives and children in the plot he owned. A marker for him was placed in September 2016 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery".
