John was the son of John A. and Eliza Austin.

He enlisted as a Private in Company "B", 6th South Carolina Infantry, in Summerville on 7 July 1861. He was wounded at the Battle of Frayser's Farm on 30 June 1862, and died in Richmond at the St. Charles Hospital (a/k/a General Hospital #8).

His grave in the John M. Gregory plot was marked in February 2017 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery".
