During the War, he served briefly as 1st Lieutenant of Company "G", 12th Virginia Infantry in 1862 before declining reelection. He later helped organize, and served as Major of, the 25th ("City") Battalion, Richmond Local Defense Troops.
He was first married to Martha Jane Pearce about 1840; they had at least two children, Louis Francis and Emma V. He later re-married to Martha's sister Almira V. Pearce in the District of Columbia on 27 February 1860. They had at least one child, Cyrus Gray.
