He was for over thirty years a locomotive engineer on the Southern Railroad, until a few years before his death, when the company on account of his age made him inspector of tank pumps between Richmond and Danville. He filled that position until just before he died. He was a Mason for 54 years with the Richmond-Randolph lodge.
He is buried near his wife and several of his children in his father-in-law James Tyler's plot.
