Attended Edgehill School in Princeton,NJ and Hurlbut School in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania.Received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1846.Moved to Lynchburg and published The Lynchburg Express for three yeras.In 1860 he became editor of the Southern Literary Messenger.He married Lucy Parke Chamberlayne of Richmond in 1863,they had ten children.Nine of the children are listed,Virginia,Hampdon,Martha,Parke,George William Jr.,Robert Coleman Bagby, Ellen N.Bagby,Phillip Haxall Bagby and Dr.J.H.C.Bagby.
