William was the son of William Harrison Brander and Anne Catherine Murchie. He married Anna on 12 December 1867, with whom he had at least four children: Mary Mills, Catherine Murchie ("Kate"), Roberta Beverley, and Helen Temple.

He enlisted and mustered as a Private into Company "B", 4th Virginia Cavalry on 23 April 1861. He transferred as a Corporal to the then-forming Company "B" (Martin's Battery), 12th Battalion, Virginia Light Artillery on 7 May 1862. He was discharged on 14 November 1862 after furnishing a substitute, John S. Lawson.

He died at 1307 W.Main Street of "Paralysis," per Cemetery records, and is buried near his wife in the William H. and Louisiana Brander plot.
