Charlie Edward Batte, Sr., 94, of Norfolk, went to be with the Lord on May 30, 2011.

He was born August 22, 1916 in Forksville, to the late Charlie Frederick and Ethel Lee Evans Batte.

Charlie, affectionately known as "Motor Pool" and "The Man" was an Army veteran of World War II. As a young boy he worked with his father at Whittle's Mill on the Meherrin River.

As a young man he ran a service station and motel in Lawrenceville and had a number of driving jobs that included Lawrenceville Brick, Inc; Bonney Motor Express (Norfolk), Kenan Transport, Hess Oil Company and Crown Petroleum.

In 1981 he retired from his job as an 18- wheel truck driver after 35 years. In 1982 at the age of 65, he joined the City of Norfolk as a part-time dispatcher for the Fleet Maintenance Department and later performed parts delivery for the city garage.

He was blessed with many friends and business acquaintances during that time. He retired from that job in 2007 at the age of 90. Charlie was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Daisy Samantha Moore Batte; daughter, Eleanor Jane; brothers, Thomas Frederick, John Weldon, Robert Anthony; sister, Virgie Lee Braswell; son-in-law, Edward Hurt; great grandson, Wayne Nicholas Clausen.

He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Batte Hurt and Judy Dale Batte Adams and her husband Mike; a son, Charlie Edward "C.E." Batte, Jr. and his wife Glenda; seven grandchildren, Dianne Hurt Clausen and her husband Wayne, Michelle Hurt Schapira and her husband Eddie, Lisa Hurt Pisano and her husband David, Kristen Harper Corbett and her husband Adam, Tom Harper and his wife Jennifer, Courtney Batte and Austin Batte; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks are given to care givers Charlene Langlois, Sharon Holland and Anne Farrell for their kind attention.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, 6568 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach, with a funeral following the visitation at 3 p.m. Saturday.

A separate service will be held on Sunday, June 5 at 3 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, 410 Windsor Avenue, Lawrenceville, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery, Lawrenceville.

The family will receive friends in Lawrenceville one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to the Lawrenceville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 596 Lawrenceville, VA 23868.

At the time of his death, Charlie was the oldest living member of the Lawrenceville Volunteer Fire Department. Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville is in charge of arrangements.
