Leonard R. Prater, 62, of No. 9 N. Oberfell in Phillips, died Tuesday at his home.

An engineer for Phillips Petroleum Co. and a Phillips resident for 30 years, Mr. Prater was a veteran of WWII. He served in the Navy and received the Navy Cross.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Micki Mongold and Jane Prater, both of Houston; his mother, Mrs. Ilene Prater of Tulare, Calif.; two brothers, Ted of Spokane, Wash. and Harry of Tulare and one sister, Mrs. Florence Korte, also of Tulare.

Funeral services are pending with Alexander Funeral Directors.

Funeral services for Leonard R. Prater, 62, of No. 9 N. Oberfell in Phillips, will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Alexander Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Jack McKinney, Jr., a Baptist missionary, will officiate.

Burial will be in Westlawn Park Cemetery.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Leonard Rolla Prater (NSN: 0-98436), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane of Torpedo Squadron NINETEEN (VT-19) attached to the U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16), while assigned to strike major Japanese Fleet Units on 25 October 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in the Philippine Islands. Lieutenant Prater skillfully and courageously piloted his aircraft in a torpedo attack on major units of a task force of the enemy fleet including aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers and destroyers. During the action he made a determined attack releasing his torpedo at close range on an enemy aircraft carrier. His skill and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
