GOWEN FAMILY RECORDS:
*********************
Raymond was not given a middle name at birth, so eventually, he added the letter
'N' as a middle initial.
As a child he was difficult to handle, so his father sent him to live with his mother; However, he could not get along with his step-father, George Fairbanks.
In 1928 he joined the U. S. Navy for four years. After his discharge he went to work for his father in the 'Gowen Blacksmith Shop' in Nampa. In 1941 he purchased the business from his father and remained in that business until his retirement at age 72.
He sold the business and much of it now belongs to the State Museum in Boise, Idaho; as most of the machinery was over fifty years old and was antique. The blacksmithing trade is almost a lost art and many of the hand tools used in his business are also in the museum. The blacksmith shop is being converted to a restaurant using the original building which was made of concrete blocks
8 inches thick.
