About 1940 he moved to San Francisco where he studied and passed the Certified Public Accountant examination. He set up his own office in San Francisco and developed a good clientele.
In 1968 he retired and sold his business and Mill Valley home.
In 1969 he and Patricia embarked on a long planned extended tour of Europe.
Aboard ship near Liverpool in England he suffered a heart attack, lived to get to a hospital in England where he died.
James had diabetes from age 14, and during the heart attack the sugar level was uncontrollable.
He was cremated and his his ashes scattered over the St. James Parish Church yard. [In the mid-sixteenth century, Chilton Cantelo had belonged to Richard Olde, an ancestor of James William Gowen].
Following Jim's death Pat bravely continued on with their original plan to take delivery
of a British Land Rover and completely tour Europe. She eventually came back to the United States and resided in the Los Angeles area and was active in MENSA where she served as President of the group.
