at St. Peters, Lincolnshire, England
died - 13 May 1700 at Wells, York, Maine
Samuel bequeathed considerable land to his children}.

Hester HOUCHIN}.

James and Mary were the parents of;
Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret.
The family resided at Wells, York, Maine.

YORK COUNTY RECORDS:

In 1697 James, in the division of his father's estate, inherited 100 acres of land near York Line.
In 1702 he sold this land to his brother, Lemuel.
This was land granted to William Gowen on
13 April 1671 by the town of Kittery.

1728 - James Gowen died.
In 1741, his widow, Mary was 'non compos mentis'; the court appointed as her guardian, her son-in-law and daughter, Hercules and Mary Hewitt.
On 19 February 1745 the Selectman of Wells served a petition to Hercules Hewitt removing him as guardian of his mother-in-law, due to his failure to provide care and necessities of life for her. He was accused of taking the profits of her real estate and neglecting her.
In 1746, James' daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, were town charges.
