Serial Killer. Convicted of three murders, police believed that he killed 26 women for certain and possibly many more, thought to be well over 100. Born Theodore Robert Cowell in 1946 at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in Burlington, Vermont, he never knew his father. His mother, Louise Cowell, and Ted initially lived with her strict Methodist parents in Philadelphia. In 1950, Louise and Ted moved to Tacoma, Washington, where Louise met and married John Bundy, in 1951. Ted had a mixed childhood, getting good grades, but having an explosive temper that got him in trouble with his teachers. In 1971, he enrolled at the University of Washington. Between 1974-1979 he forcibly violated and killed many women in Seattle, Salt Lake City, Colorado, and Florida. His first arrest was in Salt Lake City on suspicion of burglary and when a potential victim from Colorado identified him as her attacker, he was held for attempted kidnapping. He then escaped from police custody and moved on to Jacksonville, Florida. He was discovered by police in Pensacola, Florida when they noticed his car had a stolen license plate. Arrested, he was convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to death in 1979. Bundy stalled his execution with repeated frivolous appeals for almost ten years. His feeling was that his "ace in the hole" would be that he had victims which only he knew of. He asked to be spared execution in exchange for revealing all his victims but was finally put to death in Florida's electric chair in January 1989.
