Born 11 September 1838 in Green Co., Son of of Moses and Narcissa Blakeman.
Listed as a private in the Greensburg Guards, Kentucky State Guard, December 1860. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone. Absent sick at Bowling Green in January 1862. Fought at Shiloh, where he was wounded 6 April 1862. Fought at Vicksburg and Murfreesboro. Served in the McMinnville Guard, March-April 1863, where he was captured during a Federal cavalry raid, 21 April 1863, and returned to his company a month later. Fought at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; Jonesboro and the mounted campaign. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Took the Oath of Allegiance in Nashville, 20 May 1865; described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, with fair complexion, brown hair, gray eyes. Married Virginia Elizabeth Montgomery, 13 October 1868.
