GLEN H. HACKMASTER

INDEPENDENCE - Glen H. Hackmaster, Independence City Manager from 1953 until his retirement in 1968, died Sunday night in a Wichita Hospital where he was admitted Friday for surgery. He was 74.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the First Christian Church of Independence. The Rev. Monte Gravenstein will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Independence under direction of the Potts Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the First Christian Church.

Hackmaster was born on Aug. 9, 1897, in the family home west of Independence. As a child, he moved with his family into Independence.

He entered the ranching business with his father near the Colorado-Wyoming border, and returned to Independence in 1918 where he was employed with the A.J. Oakes Printing Company.

He married Isabelle Bechtel on Oct. 26,1921.

Later a draftsman with Universal Atlas Cement, he began a career with the City of Independence In 1923 in the engineering department as assistant city engineer. During World War II, he served at the Independence Army Air Field, before being commissioned a captain and serving 30 months in the European Theater.

Discharged In 1946, he was a major in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He returned to Independence as city engineer and assistant water superintendent until his appointment as city manager.

Active in community affairs, he was a member of the First Christian Church and served as chairman of the church board and the board of directors. He served on the Independence School Board, on the Kansas League of Municipalities Board of Directors, and as secretary-treasurer of the Verdigris Valley Flood Control Board.

Survivors Include the widow of the home; a son, Glen Jr. of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Jane) Randall of Wichita, and Mrs. Charles (Mary Anne) Smith of Klngsport, Tenn.; a sister, Miss Hattie Hackmaster of Independence; and five grandchildren.
