Thomas was the son of William Helme and Isabella Kirby. He was born in Garstang, Lancashire, England. He married Sarah Williamson the daughter of Sampson Williamson and Betsy Worall, 24 Aug 1835 in Manchester, England and they had eight children. Thomas and Sarah had three children in England, but one died before coming to America around 1843. This family lived in Allegheny City, near Pittsburgh, PA until they went to Wyandotte County, Kansas about 1857. Sarah Helme died 31 Oct 1865 at age 52 and is buried northeast of Fremont, on Desoto Road at the Widow Kelly place. The grave was lost in a fire. Thomas remarried a widow, Barbara Burgh Meyer, 24 Aug 1870.
