Charles Mitchell came to America from England, alone, in 1866, when he was eighteen years old. He took the train as far west as he could go, and ended up in Leavenworth, Kansas. After working on farms in the area for two years, he joined the 19th Kansas Cavalry, Co. E, which joined forces with Gen. Geo. Custer's army in the winter of 1869, to rescue two young women who had been abducted by renegade Indians. After the rescue, he returned to the Wyandotte County area, and on Jan 25, 1870, he married Isabella Helme. They were married for 58 years.
