Gospel Singer, Preacher. He started singing in the second grade and soon quit school to go to work to help support his poor South Carolina family. He was touched by the soulful sounds of The Soul Stirrers and The Dixie Hummingbirds. In 1946 he was approached by Rev. B.L. Parks and they formed The Nightingales. There were many hits songs and the group enjoyed success. In 1954 he began to preach and continued to sing and write music. After singing with other groups, he re-joined The Sensational Nightingales. After going out on his own, Julius Cheeks had several popular hits and made his mark on the gospel field with "Somebody Left On That Morning Train", "We'll Lay Down Our Lives", "When He Call Me I Will Answer" and many others. A great number of his hits still get airtime on stations thru-out the country and his music can be found on-line as he remains a popular artist. Famous for his gritty, powerful baritone voice, he was one of the giants of the gospel greats. "Stand Still Jordan", from coast to coast everybody knew "June Cheeks" as he was known for always having a story to tell that gave meaning to the songs he sang.
