William D. "Dee" Mattingly, 91, of Evansville, IN, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Deaconess Hospital. Dee, a native of Evansville, IN, was a 1932 graduate of Memorial High School. After graduation he joined the C.C.C., Civilian Conservation Corps and was sent to camp in California. Upon his return to Evansville he met his future wife, Mary Louise Hofman and they were married in 1940. In 1944, Dee was drafted into the United States Navy and was one of the first to be assigned into the famous Seabees during World War II. After service he worked for Servel Manufacturing. He later went to work for the United States Postal Service and retired after 30 years of service. Family was his main priority in life and Dee always chose a work schedule that permitted him to be active in his children's lives. Dee was a charter member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Judie Ann Turner & her husband, Jerry, of Evansville; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy Charles Mattingly & his wife, Melissa, of Henderson, KY, and Michael J. Mattingly & his wife, Elaine of Evansville; son and daughter-in-law, Donald Mattingly & his wife, Kim, of Evansville; daughter-in-law, Karen Mattingly-Brucken & her husband, Paul, Evansville; sister, Mary Catherine Hess of Evansville; brother and sister-in-law, Eugene S. Mattingly & his wife, Norene, of Arlington, VA; grandchildren, Lydia Mueller, Tom Turner, Terri Calhoun, Jill Dezember, Erin Mattingly, Will Mattingly, Chris Mattingly, Kelly Mattingly, Taylor Mattingly, Preston Mattingly and Jordan Mattingly; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Archibald & Caroline "Carrie" (Wells) Mattingly, his wife, Mary Louise (Hofman) Mattingly, in 2003, a son, Jerry Mattingly in 1968, a granddaughter, Michelle Head in 2004 and brothers, Anthony, Paul, Joseph Achibald & Joseph Fabian Mattingly; his sisters-in-law, Adeline, Lois, Geneive and Clantha Mattingly and brother-in-law, John Hess. Services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2007, at Browning Funeral Home, continued with his funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 600 Herndon Dr. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites. Friends may visit from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., where a memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 1236 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, IN 47714.
