Obituary from www.mountainviewtacoma.com.

Thomas Fannings was born in Youngstown, OH on September 6, 1933 and passed away on October 28, 2013. He retired honorably from the United States Air Force after serving many years in Europe and two tours in Vietnam. He settled in Tacoma, WA and worked in the Recreation Department at McNeil Island retiring in 1998 after 24 years. He was loved and respected by staff and inmates alike because of his gentle, caring nature. After retirement he loved fishing days on the boat with his brother-in-law Don and spending as much time as possible with the large extended family he took as his own when he and Sonya Lewis married in 1979. To know Tom was to love Tom.

He leaves behind his adoring wife, Sonya. He was “the greatest step-dad in the world” to daughters Cindy Hall (David), Stacy Lewis, Vicki Hoggard and son Kelly Lewis (Ciela). He dearly loved and was much loved by his eight grand children Adam, Jordin, Michael, Kyla, Alex, Matt, Drew and Beth. He was beloved “Papa Tom” to great-grandchildren Masiah, Alaiya, and Jaydin. He gave so much love and received equal amounts in return. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. There will be no services at his request. May he rest in peace.

PERSONAL NOTE: As his brief obituary in The Tacoma News Tribune related, "He was a very private and gentle man, and he leaves this earth as he lived, with no fanfare." That WAS the true demeanor of the man I remember.
