Major General Clare "Tim" Thompson Ireland, Jr., USAF (Ret.), of Charleston, husband of Frances Thompson Ireland, entered into eternal rest on the morning of March 30, 2012.

General Ireland was born June 8, 1920 in Peoria, Illinois, the son of Clare Thompson Ireland, Sr. and Guida Hudson Ireland.

He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a Second Lieutenant.

Gen. Ireland received a Master of Science Degree from George Washington University in 1966, and was a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff School; Air Command and Staff School; and the National War College. He served 30 years with the U.S. Air Force between 1943 and 1973.

He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential United Citation Emblem with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a Command Pilot with more than 9,000 flying hours.

He is survived by his wife of Charleston, SC; three daughters: Anne I. Andrews (Jack) of Woodbine, MD, Lynn I. Yurkiewicz (Joe) of Big Springs, WV and Jane I. Cook (Bobby) of Charleston, SC; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The relatives and friends of Major General and Mrs. Ireland are invited to attend his funeral services, April 18, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden. Inurnment will be at The Bishop Gadsden Columbarium.
