Vito John Gaidis, of Worcester, passed into the arms of his Lord Friday, June 11, 2010 after celebrating his 88th birthday on May 26th.
He leaves his wife of 15 years, Louise G. (Carlson) Lussier-Gaidis; a granddaughter, Genifer M. Gaidis of Worcester; three step children: Crystal Carpenter and her husband, James, of Auburn; John Lussier of Clinton; and Paul Lussier and his wife, Jammie, of Charlton; five step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren. His first wife, Laetitia M. (Carberry) Gaidis, died in 1991 and his son, John F. Gaidis, died in 1988.
He was born in Lithuania, the son of Julius and Veronica (Kumpa) Gaidis and traveled in 1934 by ship from Germany to the United States and resided in Worcester since then.
He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 60 years, retiring in 2007. Mr. Gaidis was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served with Battery B the 163rd Battalion in the Pacific Theater and New Guinea. He was a longtime member and daily communicant of the former St. Casimir Parish. John was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Lithuanian Naturalization & Social Club, the Retired Men's Club of Greendale, and the VFW. He was an avid reader and collector of movies and videos.
The funeral is Tuesday, June 15th from O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with a Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Stephen's Church, 357 Grafton Street. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 14th in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sisters of Immaculate Conception, 600 Liberty Highway, Putnam, CT 06260.
