Joan Johnston

Joan Johnston, 77, of Goode, died Thursday, August 30, 2007, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born September 28, 1929, in Long Beach, New York, a daughter of the late Nicholas Callan and Ellen Shea Callan. Joan was an active member of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. She served on the Bedford County School Board for 8 years; she was a member of the Goode Earth Garden Club, SIG, and Red Hill Auxiliary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Amos; one sister, Patrica Price. Joan is survived by her husband of 56 years, Colonel Verle Johnston, USAF (Ret); three daughters, Ellen Shea Hortman and her husband, David, Jamie Susan Woessner and her husband, Stephan, and Jean Marie Johnston; one son, Brigadier General Verle Johnston, Jr., and his wife Ada; one sister, Nancy McCarthy; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church with Father Stephen McNally officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, September 3, 2007, at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443. Bedford Va. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Holy Name of Mary Church at 1307 Oakwood St. Bedford Va., 24523 or to The Goode Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 178, Goode, Va. 24556.
