Abraham Ozmun (1764-1848) was married twice and had twelve children by his first wife. Oliver Ozmun is thought to be one of these twelve children by Abraham's first marriage, but proof is lacking.

Oliver Ozmun was born in Lansing, Tompkins County, New York, on October 30, 1797, who his parents were is unknown and the family spelling of the last name is inconsistent (Ozmun, Ozman, Osmun, Osmon). Lansing Historical Association, Lansing, NY, school records show head of household. from 1827 to 1837, to be Abraham (Abram) Osmun, Abraham Osmun, Jr., Daniel Osmun, Ezekiel Osmun, Isreal Osmun, Jacob L. Osmun, John Osmun, Oliver Osmun, Samuel Osmun, Lemuel Ozman or Ozmun, William Ozman or Ozmun.

Oliver married Rebecca Gibbs in Lansing, Tompkins County, New York in 1816. She was born April 27th, 1796 in Tompkins County, New York the daughter of Samuel Gibbs and Elisabeth Holmes Gibbs. Oliver and Rebecca migrated to Summit (Portage) County, Ohio, where their youngest son, Oliver Gibbs, was born. Later the family moved to Milford Township, Lagrange County Indiana, where Oliver died on August 1, 1851. Rebecca Gibbs Ozmun died August 17, 1863 in Peoria, Polk County, Iowa and is buried with her sons, Samuel G. and Nelson Ozmun, in Samuel’s Family Plot in the Peoria Cemetery, Story County, Iowa.
