Edwin Henry Bacon (1811- 1877) was born in Liberty County, Georgia, and was the son of Thomas and Sarah Holcombe Bacon. He married Louisa Eunice Stevens in 1832. His family lived first in Liberty County, Georgia, and then around 1856 they moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he and another partner had a successful law firm. He became a wealthy attorney and land owner. They had ten children who reached adulthood. He was a commander of the Liberty Independent Troops, an elite county military unit. During the Civil War, he and his family moved near Albany, Georgia, to avoid the federal troops as he worked for the CSA. After the Civil War they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, before returning to Savannah. He died on the Isle of Hope near Savannah, Georgia.


Edwin Henry Bacon and Louisa Eunice Stevens were married in 1832.They had the following children:

i. Wallace Winn Bacon was born on 16 Jan 1849 in Midway, Liberty Co., GA. He died on 24 Oct 1918 in Albany, Dougherty Co., GA.

ii. Edwin Henry Bacon Jr. was born on 28 Aug 1839 in Walthourville, Liberty Co., GA. He died on 30 Nov 1915 in Eastman, Dodge Co., GA.

iii. Albert S. Bacon was born in Jan 1843 in Georgia . He died on 31 Jan 1920 in Chatham Co., GA.

iv. Sarah Annie Eliza Bacon was born on 08 Feb 1833 in GA. She died on 22 Jul 1862 in Albany, Dougherty Co., GA.

v. Cornelia Bacon was born in 1858 in GA . She died on 26 Apr 1920 in Fulton Co., GA.

vi. Louisa "Lula" Stevens Bacon was born on 12 May 1842 in Walthourville, Liberty Co., GA. She died on 06 Feb 1899 in Albany, Dougherty Co., GA.

vii. Oliver Thomas Bacon was born on 08 Jul 1835 in Midway, Liberty Co., GA. He died on 03 Mar 1873 in Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA.

viii. Caroline Mary Bacon was born in Jul 1837 in Walthourville, Liberty Co., GA[2]. She died on 10 Nov 1917 in Macon, Bibb Co., GA.

ix. DeWitt Clinton Bacon was born in 1846 in GA. He died in Bayboro, Chatham Co., GA.

The following is quoted from "Souvenir Sketches of Georgia and Florida" pages 81-82 found on ancestry.com: "Major Edwin H Bacon was a lawyer and represented his county (Liberty, Georgia) in the legislature several terms. He was judge of Mitchell county court two years. He was in C.A.S. (SIC) government employ during the entire war; was captain of a company of old men; later in charge of a slaughter house belonging to the government. In early life he was captain of a cavalry company known as the "Liberty Troop." This did service in the Revolution, and the organization is still kept up and did good service in the late war. Subsequently he was made major of the squadron of which said company was a part. It was tendered to but not accpeted by the Government during the Mexican war. The major had ten children, of whom nine lived to mature years, namely: Sarah, wife of Major M. B. Millen; her death occurred in 1862; Oliver T., married to Miss Eugenia Jones; he died aged thirty-seven; Caroline M., wife of Rev. E. W. Warren, D.D., well and favorably known as the minister of the First Baptist Church, Macon; Edwin H., Louisa S., wife of Dr. W. A. Strother of Albany; Albert S. married Rubie Hickman of Savannah; DeWitt C. married first to Minnie Holcombe of Savannah; his second wife is Callie Holcombe, a half-sister of the former; Dr. Wallace, a practicing physician in Albany, married to Miss July B. Willingham; Cornelia L., wife of Dr. C. T. Osborne of Columbus, Ga."


SMN May 29, 1877: 3/5 - The funeral of Major E. H. Bacon took place on Saturday morning from the Baptist church, and was very largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Harley, after which "Nearer My God to Thee" was sung by the choir.
Dr. Axson, an old friend of the deceased, offered a prayer. The pall bearers were Col. W. T. Thompson, Capt. W. W. Paine, Judge W. B. Fleming, S. W. Branch, Esq., Jno. M Guerar, Esq., Wily Woodbridge, Esq., George W. Wylly, Esq., and L. J. B. Fairchild, Esq.
