August Zado, a former fire chief in East Detroit for 35 years and father of East Detroit Police Chief Arthur Zado, died Thursday at Saratoga Hospital, Detroit, at the age of 76.
Mr. Zado, who retired from civic duty in 1957, began work for the city in 1922 as foreman of the water department. He was one of two volunteer firemen in those days when the city was know as Halfway.
In 1929, when the city charter was drafted, he became the city's first fire chief in newly established department.

Born Feb. 26, 1891 in Lukow, Poland, he came to Detroit with his family as a boy. In June, 1915, he married Esrosina Neumann and the couple moved to East Detroit in 1917.
Mr. Zado was a life member of Macomb County, Southeastern Michigan, Michigan State, and International Fire Chief's Associations, and a member of Metropolitan Club Spirit No. 33, of East Detroit.
Besides his wife and son, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert Morrow, of East Detroit, and Mrs. Herbert Kesel, of Rochester; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Clyne Funeral Home with Rev. Donald R.Staode of mount Zion Lutheran Church, Detroit officiating.
Burial will be in White Chapel Cemtery, Troy.
