Ruth was born Nov. 23, 1922, at Elkhart, Kansas to Elbert Humble and Stella B. Wiggins. The family moved to Cedar Vale, Kansas when she was about four years old and she grew up there. She was a teacher and taught for four years before wedding her childhood sweetheart, Virgil B. Davis, Jr. on Aug. 2, 1946 at Winfield, Kansas. They lived in Texas for many years, moving to Oklahoma in the mid 1960s. Virgil preceded her in death in 1999.
From the time she was a young girl Ruth loved to sing and did so at many weddings and social gatherings. A member of the church of Christ, Ruth taught Bible classes for many years and she and Virgil were involved in the support of mission work. A talented seamstress, she also enjoyed needlework, painting, and writing. She worked diligently on the genealogy records for her family and took care to label the sizable collection of old photographs so the past generations wouldn't be forgotten.
At the time of her passing, she was survived by children Carolyn Kirby of San Angelo, Texas, Sherry Dodson and husband Gary of Independence, Missouri, and Richard Davis and wife Janet of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She took great joy in her seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. She was also survived by one brother, Dick Humble of Tulsa.
Ruth's memorial service was held at the church of Christ in Broken Arrow, under the direction of Christian-Gavlik Funeral Home, with Scott Keele officiating. He read passages from Ruth's own writings, and she was memorialized in the following poem written by her daughter-in-law:
Carried to God
You were carried to God
by His angels of glory.
And though some folks might think
that's the end of your story
We who have loved you
know your story won't end.
It lives on in our hearts
and in the heart of each friend.
With blind eyes no longer,
oh! – what now you behold
As you joyfully stroll
upon streets made of gold.
Your hand is now steady.
Your mind is now clear.
You're surrounded by loved ones
you have longed to be near.
We lift our eyes upward
as we whisper good-bye
