Oregon Pioneer of 1851
Calvin Peter Burkhart was the second of twelve children born to John and Rebecca (Baltzell) Burkhart while they lived in Hawkins County, Tennessee on Feb 24, 1819. He moved, with his parents and siblings, to Kentucky in @1829, where a little sister was born and died [Volumnia Vitturia Burkhart], then to Carrollton, Greene Co., Illinois in 1830, and to Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa, in 1835. Calvin met Elizabeth J. Doughty, another native of Tennessee, while living in Iowa, and they married on Apr 28, 1844, establishing their own household in the area. But Calvin's father, John, had heard of the land in Oregon that was available to those willing to settle on it and help tame the Territory, hopefully making it a state some day. He asked Calvin's brothers, Coriolanus ("Crill") and Raymond to travel to Oregon to scout out the Western region to determine if their family should move one last time. The men made their trip in 1846 and returned with glowing reports; they were so excited and told such stories of the Oregon Territory that John, although he was 60 yrs. of age, was eager to go, as were his adult children, although Calvin and Elizabeth remained behind in Iowa until 1850, before joining their family in Oregon. By the time they arrived, Calvin's parents and siblings had been in Oregon for three yrs., having arrived on Oct 16, 1847 at the site of the future town of Albany, Linn County, Oregon. The Burkharts, Monteiths and Hacklemans were the three families that founded the town of Albany, with John caring for the Monteith claim while they went off to seek their fortunes in the gold mines of California in 1850. Calvin and Elizabeth had 3 children while in Iowa: Mary M., b. 1845, Elizabeth, b. 1848, and John Henry, b. 1850. After they arrived in Oregon, they settled in East Albany. When the census was taken on Apr 23, 1860, their farm was valued at $3600 and they had $1542 in cash. They also had six children: Mary M. was 15, Elizabeth was 12, John H. was 10, Emily was 8 yr. old b. Oregon Territory, Calvin G. was 6 yr. old b. Oregon Territory, and Frank A. was 4 yrs. old and also b. in Oregon Territory [Oregon became a state on Feb 14, 1859].
In 1870, their donation land claim had increased in value to $12,800. Calvin was still a Farmer when the census was taken on July 16, 1870, and Elizabeth was still "Keeping House" {an understatement for anyone who has ever known or been a farmer's wife!}. Their son, John H., was now 20 yrs. old and worked on the farm, as did Calvin G., who was 16 yrs. old and Frank A., who was 14 yrs. old. Emily was 18 yrs. old and in the home. In 1880, the census was taken on June 15th. Calvin was still a Farmer at the age of 61 yrs., Elizabeth was still "Keeping House", Their son, John H., was 28 and also a Farmer. Daughter, Mary M. had married and had now returned home, a widow at the age of 36 yrs., her last name Lague. [I looked for censuses for her for 1870 so I could learn her spouse's name, but couldn't find any census under Lague or Logue for Iowa or Oregon]. Daughter Emma (Emily) had married Henry Flindt, a boot maker from Illinois, and they had settled with their two children in Albany. They moved to San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA around the turn of the Century, however, had two more children, then divorced before 1910. Emma became a dress maker and lived with her younger son, Homer, until she passed. She is buried in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA. Calvin's dear wife, Elizabeth, died just one day after her 64th birthday on May 19, 1886, and was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. John Henry ended up in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA. in 1910, a widower, working as a Carpenter for a contractor building new homes. I don't know if he returned to Oregon or not. Calvin did remarry, to Matilda Jane Stafford, but she passed on Aug 14, 1890 and was buried next to Elizabeth, sharing her headstone at Riverside Cemetery. Calvin moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1905, and lived there for the remainder of his life*. He lived to be 88 years of age, joining his wives in Eternity on June 3, 1907, and was buried with them at Riverside Cemetery in Albany. May they all Rest in Peace in Paradise.
