Augustus Henry Burkhart was born on August 29th, 1843 to John and Rebecca (Baltzell) Burkhart while the family was living in Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa, the last place they lived before taking the Oregon Trail in 1847. Their son lived almost exactly one year, passing from this world just nine days before his first birthday for reasons unknown to me. He died on August 20th, 1844. He would have been buried in Burlington, Iowa, much to his parents sorrow, as they loved this son as they loved all of their 12 children. Little Augustus was the second of two children who did not survive childhood in John and Rebecca's family {the other child being Volumna Vitturia Burkhart, their daughter who had died in 1831 while the family was living in Meade County, Kentucky}. I have searched for the resting place of Augustus Henry Burkhart to no avail. His parents, I'm sure, visited his grave many times before the family left for the Oregon Territory in early 1847, but I have not been able to find any record of where his grave is located. It is also possible that he was buried on his family's farm and homestead as was quite common when families believed they would remain there the remainder of their days. I am hoping, with all of the Find A Grave volunteers in both Iowa and Kentucky, I will some day hear of one or both children's graves being located in areas of cemeteries not as yet investigated.
