Baptist Minister and Teacher. Benjamin Henry was a graduate of Hillsdale College in Hillsdale Michigan, with a Philosophy Degree 1893, a Divinity Degree in 1897, studied at Mississippi Normal College [University Southern MS] to become a teacher.

VANCLEAVE PASTOR CLOSES BUSY LIFE
Services Held For Former Missionary, Aged 84
Vancleave, Miss.
Funeral services for the Rev B.H. Ellis, 84, who died last Sunday, were held at the residence of his son, B.E. Ellis. Interment was in Vancleave Cemetery.
Mr. Ellis, a retired Baptist minister and missionary of Jackson County, was born in Himrods, N.Y., and obtained a degree from Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Mich. Forty-five years ago he became a citizen of Jackson County.

Helped Get Aid
He was instrumental in obtaining congressional aid for deepening the Pascagoula harbor to permit sea-going vessels to dock there for the first time. He was commercial secretary for the port and a leader in the movement to have the name of the town changed from Scranton to Pascagoula.
Mr. Ellis served several months as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Pascagoula, donating his entire salary for their first parsonage. His own preference in religious work was for missionary and country church work. As a missionary, he served with the miners in his youth and the last 12 years prior to his retirement a dozen years ago, he and his wife served the group of Indian descendants in western Jackson County, both in religious and secular teaching.
Survivors include: Two sisters, Mrs. Anne E. Hamilton of Winchester, VA., and Mrs. Frank E. Clark of Cincinnati; three sons, the Rev. Ivan C Ellis of La Crescenta, Calif., B.E. Ellis of Vancleave; and George L. Ellis of Mobile; four daughters, Mrs. A.E. Summers of Prichard, Mrs. Ira T. Havens of Biloxi, Mrs. J.F. Tisdale of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. J.W. Murphy of Vancleave, and 17 grandchildren.

Benjamin & Clarissa married at North Adams Hillsdale Co MI on June 29, 1898 by Rev H.R. Murphy.

Siblings are, Dr Edward Jacob Carpenter Ellis, Emma Louise Ellis Chisholm, Alicia Anna Ellis Hamilton and Mary Frances 'Franc' Ellis Clark.
