Simmie "Douglas" Beasley, a longtime resident of Columbus, Athens, Hartwell, all in Georgia, and later at The Methodist Oaks, Orangeburg, died peacefully at the Veterans Victory Home in Walterboro.
His generous and loving spirit, his sense of humor, his warm engaging personality and his deep concern for all human beings will be sorely missed by his family and friends and by the hundreds he touched with his grace throughout his life. He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Anne Osteen Beasley, and they were blessed by having 69 wonderful years together.
He was the only child of the late George D. Beasley and Velia McMillan Beasley. He resided in Columbus from 1924 to 1966, Athens from 1967 to 1980, Hartwell from 1981 to 1992 and later other cities in South Carolina, finally moving to Walterboro to be close to his son Ronnie's residence in Ruffin. Due to his progressing illness in 2006, he moved to The Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg. He was a graduate of Jordan High School, voted the most popular male in his class, captain of the football team and received scholarships to both University of Georgia and Auburn University in Alabama. He was later associated with the University of Georgia, had a successful 41-year career with Southern Bell Telephone Co., where he held increasingly marketing managerial responsibilities until he retired in 1982. His last marketing assignment in Athens was the universities and colleges over the state of Georgia. World War II occurred during his 41-year telephone career and he served in the Pacific area in the Army Signal Corps and was a member of the Army Hawaiian All Star Touring Football Team that went all over the Pacific War area, entertaining the troops, and then was honorably discharged.
He was a devout Christian, an ordained deacon in his Baptist faith and performed many church responsibilities, such as chairman of many committees, departmental director, class president, usher, Royal Ambassador leader, counselor for many years at R. A. Georgia Baptist State Encampment, recreational basketball and football leaders and New Jersey Mission Building member. He was never happier than when building crafts for church bazaars, as his greatest hobby was wood crafting, not only for his church, but for all his family. He currently was a member of First Baptist Church, Walterboro.
He greatly enjoyed boating and fishing, while maintaining homes on Lake Hartwell, GA and in Columbus on the backwater. He was also active in his communities by serving on the Georgia Muscogee County Democratic Party, Lions Club member, a Parent-Teacher Association member and officer, Columbus High School Choir Parent Advisory member, president of Columbus Chapters of Telephone Pioneers and executive member of Georgia Telephone Pioneers. He was a former member of the South Carolina Historical Society, Preservation Society of Charleston and volunteer at Summerville, S. C. Presbyterian Home. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Anne Beasley Butler, in 1998.
