He was born in Slaina, Puerto Rico, son of the late Francisco Alicea and Margarita Maldonado Alicea. He enlisted in the United States Army on July 30, 1954, and was honorably discharged on July 18, 1957. He resided in New York, where he was employed for 25 years with the New York Transit Authority. He was 75. He was predeceased by a son, Raul Francisco "Spunky" Alicea.

His survivors include his wife of 40 years, Grace A. Banjamin Alicea of the home; three children, Lisa M. Benjamin of Vance, Vestina E. Benjamin of Long Island, NY, and Eugene Benjamin of Queens, NY; a sister, Irene Alicea of New Haven, Conn.; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; sisters and brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held at Shuler-Marshall Funeral Home Chapel, 1235 Unity Road, Holly Hill, with the Rev. Julius Steed, pastor of Greater Unity AME Church, officiating. Burial was private.
