Adair County News, June 11, 1902

Mr. John A. Coffey Dead

The intelligence of the death of the subject of this notice was a surprise to the citizens generally of Adair county. He had been in Texas for the past two years, reaching Columbia about ten days before his death, which occurred at 12:30 p.m. last Saturday [June 7th], at the residence of his son, Mr. J.N. Coffey, who lives on Greensburg street. The deceased was sick when he arrived, but there were no serious developments until three days before he died. Had he lived until the first day of July he would have been sixty-seven years old. He was born in Cumberland county, but was reared in Adair, the greater portion of his life having been spent in the Breeding neighborhood where the remains were interred.
Mr. Coffey was a man of integrity and a Christian gentleman and had many friends all over Adair county, who will regret to hear of his death. Mr. Coffey was twice married. His first wife was the mother of Mr. J.N. Coffey, and by his last wife, who died several years ago, there are four or five children, one here and the others in Texas.
The remains were buried near Breeding last Sunday afternoon, many friends and relatives being present to pay their last respects to the one they loved while living. The News extends its sympathy to the afflicted ones.

Married to Mary Ann (Hill) Carter on Dec 26, 1866 in Adair County and Julia (Draper) Kemp on Nov 27, 1876. Julia was also married to Albert T Kemp in 1870 in Adair County. She died of typhoid fever on ay 29, 1901 and is buried in McGregor Cemetery in McLennan County, Texas. She was the daughter of David Draper. He married Mary Ann Hill on Oct 19, 1860 in Russell County. Mary Ann died of bloody flux about 1871. I think she might have been married to a Carter or a Parrigen before she married John since some of paperwork has that name on it. Mary and her children were living with Dempsey Hill on the 1870 census in Russell County. Her last child was born in 1872. I don't know if she died then or left John. One of the children's dc's gave her as Mary Parrigen which makes me wonder if she remarried. John's obit just said he was married twice. He lived in McLennan County, Texas for a few years.

Children with Mary:

Hettie Jane Gaskin, Oct 22, 1855 to Oct 6, 1944, buried in Gaskin Cemetery in Jamestown, Ky. Married Charlie Adams Gaskin.
