George Barr Hammet, Jr., 83, died Sunday, November 10, 2013, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at Kingstree Presbyterian Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Williamsburg Cemetery.

Mr. Hammet was born August 19, 1930, in Kingstree, the son of the late George Barr Hammet, Sr. and Gaynelle Gamble Hammet. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a former employee of Santee Electric Co-op. He served 41 years in law enforcement, first with the Williamsburg Co. Sheriff's Dept. and retired from SLED with 23 years of service. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Kingstree Fire Dept. for 31 years and was one of the founding members of Kingstree Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are: his wife, Carroll Staggs Hammet of Kingstree; four daughters, Susan Smith (Jerry) of Florence; Ginger Odom (James) of Pawley's Island; Mary Mallick (Bruce) of Columbia; and Novia Cooper (Russell) of Kingstree; two brothers, Jerry Hammet (Betsy) of Fripp Island; and Chalmers Hammet (Etta) of Kingstree; one sister, Patsy Shi of Cary, North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
