Deputy Sheriff Joseph Antwine died from injuries he sustained when his patrol car was involved in a collision with a light pole.

Deputy Antwine and his partner were responded to a back-up another unit at a domestic violence call when he lost control of the vehicle as it rounded a curve on Half Moon Road in Johnsonville. Both Deputy Antwine and his partner were thrown from the vehicle as it overturned and struck a pole.

Both of the Deputies were removed to McLeod Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries. Deputy Antwine's partner was released several days later, however Deputy Antwine remained in intensive care with serious injuries. He died one week later from those injuries.

Deputy Antwine had served with the Florence County Sheriff's Office for less that a year.

Deputy Joseph Charles Antwine, 23 of Lake City, SC passed away Friday, November 29 2013 due to injuries sustained from a car accident while responding to a fellow deputy's request for backup Friday evening, November 22, 2013.

He was born February 18, 1990 in Hiedelberg, Germany, a son of Charles E. Antwine and Maibritt Philipp Tunstall.

Deputy Antwine is preceded by his grandparents Wilfried and Wilma Philipp, and his grandmother Dorothy Antwine.

Joseph is a Lake City High School Honor Graduate class of 2008 and a graduate of The Citadel Class of 2012. While at the Citadel he obtained the rank of Cadet Major. He was a member of KA (Kappa Alpha Order), Lake City United Methodist Church of Lake City, SC and The Citadel Methodist Church. Joseph was a Sheriff's Deputy with the Florence County Sheriff's Office and a SWAT member affiliated with the Entry Team. He has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his academic and professional careers including the Col. Joseph E. Perkins Honor Committee Award for recognition of invaluable service to the Corps of Cadets by upholding and promoting the high ideals of The Citadel honor system as a member of the schools Honor Committee which he served on for one year. He was also the President of The Citadel's Criminal Justice Society for two years and an active member of The Citadel's Reenactment Society. Joseph was a man of honor and integrity, a wonderful son and a loving brother.

He is survived by his parents; step-father Jimmy Tunstall, Jr.; younger sister, Jessica S. Antwine; grandparents, Charles (Wanda) Antwine Sr; girlfriend, Casey M. Yarborough; uncles and aunts in Europe: Helga (Rolf) Dambach, Hans (Inge) Philipp, Gunther (Margit) Philipp, Rosemay Kacmier (godmother), Adelheid (Dieter) Ulrich, Werner (Elke) Philipp, Hannelore (Rhinehardt) Baer, Uve Philipp, Sigrid (Dieter) Lawine, Ralf (Michaela) Philipp, Annette (Marcus) Honig and numerous cousins; uncles and aunts in the U.S.: Major (Retired) Thomas (Susan) Antwine, Mason (Melva) Meyers (godparents), Curt (Hope) Whaley, Christopher (Crystal) Antiwne and numerous other family and friends.

The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM Tuesday and Wednesday December 3 - 4, 2013 at the S.C. Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the S.C. Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church of Lake City, SC.
