Richard David Byars, 68, of Shelby passed away December 30, 2015 at William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. He was a 1965 graduate of AC Flora High School and attended Erskine College. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1968-1969 in Vietnam where he fought primarily in the Mekong Delta. After the war, he graduated in 1971 from the University of South Carolina where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice.

After earning his degree, he served for 12 years as a deputy and detective for the Lexington County Sheriff's Department. He later was employed at Michelin North America, was a volunteer EMT with the Batesburg Leesville Rescue Squad and after moving to North Carolina, was an employee of Sony Polygram. He was an avid Carolina Gamecock's fan and enjoyed attending as many sporting events of his grandchildren and great nieces and nephews as he possibly could during his retirement years.

He was the son of the late Grace Wilson Byars and the late Relford Nathaniel Byars. He was also predeceased by his sister: Elizabeth “Kay” Byars Shirah of Shelby, NC. He is survived by his daughter: Winn Byars Fitzgerald and husband Rod, along with their children: Dominik, Braydon, Jonah and Averi of West Columbia, SC and his son, Michael Courtney Byars and wife, Natalie along with their children: Zachary, Hannah and Ethan of Tryon, NC. He is also survived by brother-in-law: Edward Shirah of Shelby; two nieces: Cindy Shirah Nunnery and Lisa Shirah Warren; and their husbands and children.

A graveside service will be held Monday January 4, 2016 at 1 PM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC followed by a reception at the Club House at Arcadia's Edge.
