In 2003 my brother and I drove to the Cove Cemetery (we're from out of town). Just before entering the cemetery we spotted this beautifully decorated grave, with the wooden, carved headstone that read "Fred of Cove, Beloved by All, Killed (date)". We stood there wondering who Fred was, when a nice local woman drove up and gave us the story. Apparently Fred was the local dog in Cove. Each day he would make his rounds to various people's homes where people would give him treats. He would then make it into town and he would walk into the bar. Somebody would put a dollar in his mouth and Fred would then go up to the bartender, give him the dollar, and then Fred was given something to eat. Fred was killed when he was hit by a car. He is buried just outside of the cemetery because of an ordinance that doesn't allow animals to be buried inside of the cemetery.

That's the way I remember the story - if anybody from Cove reads this and wants to add to this, please do so.
