Dirck had no birth or baptismal record and was born in the 1630's in Holland. He came to America about 1650, for on a list of those swearing allegiance to the British Crown in 1687, it was recorded that he had been in the province 37 years. He lived at Flatlands, and was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church there, serving as deacon in 1682 and elder in 1703. In June 1694 he and his wife conveyed their farm "in the township of Amesford or fflacklands" to Hendrick Wyckoff, in exchange for other lands there, and there after his name was seen in connection with numerous land transfers. In 1701 he was described as "of the Bay", when he was bondsman for John Aerson "of the Ferry" (Brooklyn). In the census of 1698 his family ar Flatlands consisted of a man, a woman, and 7 children. In 1689 Derck was commissioned Ensign in the Kings County military company, and in 1690 promoted to Captain, Commanding a foot company in the Canada expedition of 1691. In 1704 he was styled "fisherman", and he and others of Flatlands gave bonds to the Town of Jamaica not to fish or hawk there. Aeltje survived Derck, who died about January 1723/24 in Flatlands, Kings County, NY. The will of "Derick Amertman", dated 20 September 1709 and proved 1 February 1723/24, named his wife Aelkie and 10 children. His widow served as executrix.
