Major (Ret.) Charles Alston Coffin , 66 of Columbus, Georgia, died suddenly at his home on December 12, 2011.

Graveside Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Harmony Cemetery in Richland, GA with Reverend Charles R. Hasty, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends following the services according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
Major Coffin was born June 7, 1945, in Richland, Georgia son of the late Charles Alston Coffin, Sr. and Alice Walker Coffin of Richland, Georgia. Major Coffin's father was a cotton broker, merchant, city councilman of Richland, and noted local citizen. During his term as State Senator from the Twelfth District of Georgia, he died unexpectedly on August 5, 1951. Major Coffin's mother, Alice Walker Coffin, served the rest of his term. She would later marry Paul Leon Gill, a banker and pharmacist of Ellaville, GA
Major Coffin attended the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity and earned his JD degree from Samford University, Cumberland School of Law, in Birmingham, AL. At the time of his graduation, he was the youngest graduate in the history of the law school.
After practicing law in Alabama and Georgia for a number of years, he entered the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the United States Army. In the Corps, Major Coffin was a criminal trail lawyer and prosecutor. He was a very successful prosecutor who was distinguished in his work resulting in the conviction of many felons.
Major Coffin was a devoted husband and father who served as a Deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Columbus. With a passion for history, he cultivated a detailed knowledge of his own Coffin family who left England in the 1630's to become one of the original settlers on Nantucket Island, MA. This family helped initiate the whaling industry and played a major role in early American maritime commerce.
Survivors include his wife Hwa Yong Coffin of Columbus, son Samuel Lee Coffin attending Harvard University in Cambridge, MA and two sons by a previous marriage (Juliene Wilson Coffin): Charles Alston Coffin (Sydney) of Charlotte, NC and Dr. David Wilson Coffin (Dr. Janis) of Augusta, GA. and five grandchildren: Charles Detlow Coffin, Hugh Coffin, Helen Coffin of Charlotte, N.C. and Madison Coffin and Chloe Coffin of Augusta, GA. He is also survived by two sisters: Alice Coffin Brown (Dr. W. Virgil) of Atlanta and Paula Gill Williams (Nelson) of Americus, GA and brother: John Paul Gill of Ellaville, GA. He is also survived by many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, members of his extended family and dear friends.
