Johann Joseph Fux
Birth: 1660
Death: Feb. 13, 1741

Austrian Composer and Theorist. He held many important posts in the Viennese Court and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Kappellmeister by Emperor Charles VI. Fux's many religious works are seldom performed today, his operas not at all. But his treatise on counterpoint, "Gradus ad Parnassum" (1725), is still a standard musical text. It was studied by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and famously mocked by Debussy in his piano suite, "Children's Corner."  (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
