Army Spc. Baylis was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado. Baylis died of wounds sustained on May 30 when his dismounted patrol encountered enemy small-arms fire. Matthew grew up in Oakdale, New York, where he loved to play Army – he never wanted to play anything else and dreamed of being a soldier. He graduated in 2005 from Connetquot High School and immediately joined the Army because he loved his country. On March 7, he was deployed to Iraq. Friends and family could not believe Matthew did not make it back because he was always so positive. They remember a handsome fun-loving boy who was an excellent drummer. He and his friends from school would get together to play and entertain the whole neighborhood. He loved wrestling, playing the drums, He-Man, the History Channel, dinosaurs, "Braveheart", and "The Da Vinci Code". Matthew was a kind, respectful boy who always had a smile and hello for everyone. He was also quite a heartthrob with the girls – no one could resist that grin and those amazing blue eyes.
