Jack Beard, a Farmer of the Casey Creek Section and His Team Killed.
Was In Cornfield When Bolt Came.
Last Tuesday afternoon, July 14th, Mr. Jack Beard, a well-known citizen of Casey Creek section and his team were killed by lightning.
Mr. Beard was in his cornfield plowing, and seeing that there was to be a heavy storm, he unhooked his horses and started for his barn, riding one of the animals.
His mother was standing in the front door of her home, anxious for her son to arrive as quickly as possible, as she felt very uneasy. She saw him coming, and her heart was gladdened, believing that he would soon reach safety, but her hopes were not realized. Before her son got out of the field, the bolt came, killing him and the two horses. Can any one picture the anguish of that mother?
As soon as the storm was over, friends gathered and conveyed the dead body to the house. The funeral services were held on Wednesday, and it is said that an immense throng of people attended the religious exercises and burial.
The deceased was about 35 years old and was well-known in the northeastern portion of the county. He had been married, but was divorced from his wife the last term of the Adair circuit court, as we understand.
The people of the neighborhood are in great sympathy for the aged mother.
