John Watkins was the son of Benjamin Watkins and Anna Riddle Watkins. He married Judith Watkins 16 April 1812. They had 11 children. He built a mill on his property "Ampthill" which provided a very comfortable life for his family. The Ampthill home still stands, although it was moved to a different location on the James River.

my 3rd gr grandfather, The notice of his death was published on 27 Feb 1855 in the Richmond Whig stating he died on the night of Wednesday, the 21st instant, at Ampthill, his residence, in the county of Chesterfield, in the 66th year of his age.
