John was born in Merrill, Aroostook, Maine, USA , the third child and second son of Enoch Ripley Gardner and Harriet "Hattie" A. Lilley.

John worked for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. In 1911 he emigrated to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada to work on the Canadian Railroad. He can be found on the 1911 Canada Census living as a lodger in Medicine Hat. By 1920, he had returned to Merrill, Aroostook, Maine and was again living with his parents on the family farm.

In 1926, John married Marguerite "Peggy" Nicherson, who was also from Merrill. They were the parents of 4 children; Iris, Joyce, Eugene and "Tia".

John died on 26 Mar 1973 in Mars Hill, and was buried in Merrill Cemetery near his parents and siblings.

(Merrill was know as Merrill Plantation until its incorporation in 1911 when it became Merrill).
