United States Astronaut. A colonel in the United States Air Force, he was selected as an astronaut in 1994, and served as flight commander on the Space Shuttle Columbia. On February 1, 2003 NASA lost all communication and radar contact with the shuttle just minutes before its 9:16 a.m. scheduled landing time. A short time later, it was confirmed that the Columbia had exploded over eastern Texas, and that there were no survivors. Members of the Columbia crew had completed more than 80 scientific experiments during their 16-day mission in space. In addition to Husband, the crew comprised Pilot William McCool, Payload Commander Michael Anderson, Mission Specialist Kalpana Chawla, Mission Specialist David Brown, Mission Specialist Laurel Clark, and Israeli Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon.
