She then studied law at the University of Paris in France and later at the Law School of London, returning to Turkey in 1922. She has a career as a jurist. She married Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on January 29, 1923, shortly before he became the first President of Turkey. She was modern by the day's standards and was active in public life, influencing women's emancipation in the 1920s. She divorced on August 5, 1925. She retired to Izmir and İstanbul.
