Crittenden, an on-duty Deputy Marshall with the LA City Marshall's office, (later the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department)was shot along with his partne, Leon Romer, while attempting to serve an eviction notice at 1516 E 23rd St, Los Angeles. The tenant of the home, George Farley, was several months behind in his rent, owing a totalof $36. Accompanied by the landlord, the deputies entered the $7 per month home to remove Farley's belongings when he opened fire, killing them both. A shootout ensued for several hours, with Farley being severely wounded but eventually recovering and being sentenced to prison.
