Owen, a Sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was killed in the line of duty .
He was killed while attempting to apprehend a burglary suspect. He was shot in the face and after he dropped to the ground, the suspect shot him four more times. He died about two hours later in Antelope Valley Hospital surrounded by his wife, mother, adult sons and stepdaughter.∼Sgt. Steve Owen, 53, responded to a call at an apartment complex at West Avenue J7, near Antelope Valley College. Gunfire was heard and a deputy at the front of the building ran in back to see Owen suffering from a gunshot wound.
