Calderwood was the first and only Los Angeles County Deputy Marshall ever killed in the line of duty. On the night of Dec 22, 1930, he was returning home from work when he observed a victim of an armed robbery at 876 S. Vermont Ave struggling with a suspect. Calderwood, acting within the scope of his employment as a peace officer, intervened. He did not know that there were actually two suspects. He was stabbed to death by one of the suspects. The shopkeeper was also shot but survived. Both attackers were later apprehended and executed by hanging at Folsom Prison.
