"Eyes bright like a dove
A gentle heart filled with love
Her hair was soft and smooth
And every step was graceful when she moved
Her sweet kiss I have sorely missed
My spirit had loved her from the start
And I grieve for how soon she had to part
When she left my heart strings strained and tugged
But the path of God I dare not judge
This soul whom all my love went
Was to the world just a common rodent."

I got my rat Belle as a companion for my first rat Stellie. Stellie was a Fancy Blue rat that was white with a blue hood. So I got Belle who was all blue to match her. It was one of the best decisions of my life. I got her in December and she was about a month old so she was still small. She was like a little dog. No matter where I would put her in the room I could get on top of a stool and she would find away to get in my lap. Her favorite thing to do was to give kisses.

I would go for walks around the block with her in the hood of my coat and she would just ride along enjoying every minute of it. She had a Tarzan figurine that she loved to snatch from me when I'd hold it up to her cage and she would drag him into her hut and chew on him! It was very fun for her and I to do!

Every morning when I would stir I would look over and see her run out of her hut to the edge of the cage where the hatch was and she would wait there for me to come open it and give her love and kisses. She was a very special rat and I cry it seems like all the time for her and my other sweethearts. They only live a couple of years and then they are gone, gone too soon.

Belle and her companions (my other ratties) had all gotten a respiratory infection which is common in ratties. Unfortunately you have to give them medication daily to keep it at bay. As it progresses it causes them to breath faster and faster and those are the signs that you have to take them to the vet to put them down. I did not know that for 2 of my babies and they died in my hand because their lungs had been full of fluid. So when it came Belle's time I made the decision to have her humanely put to sleep. That day was one of the hardest days of my life, I lost a part of my soul and heart. Before they put her down I held her close to my face and she kissed me over and over again. And then she went to be with our Lord across The Rainbow Bridge.

You are in my heart everyday you are so loved...

The Rainbow Bridge Poem:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
